Two men have died after a water emergency along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Ottawa County, Michigan, authorities confirmed.

Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly before 1:15 p.m. Saturday to reports of multiple people struggling in the water near the south pier of the Pigeon Lake Channel in Port Sheldon Township.

According to the sheriff’s office, bystanders quickly attempted to rescue the distressed swimmers before emergency personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, they were unable to safely bring the men back to shore.

When deputies and other emergency responders reached the scene, they entered the rescue operation and were able to remove the victims from the water. Lifesaving measures were immediately initiated, but both men were ultimately pronounced dead.

Authorities identified the victims as a 24-year-old man from Warrenville, Illinois, and a 26-year-old man from Ada, Michigan.

The incident drew a large response from local emergency agencies, who worked together to conduct rescue and recovery efforts along the busy waterfront area.

Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the emergency. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather information regarding the events that unfolded near the pier.

The tragedy serves as a reminder of the dangers that can exist along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, particularly near piers and channel entrances where strong currents, changing wave conditions, and rip currents can quickly place swimmers in danger.

Community members have expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the two men as they mourn the sudden loss of their loved ones.
